Ceremonial Bib Handover at the Mayor's Residence
As is tradition, both Czech and international stars of canoe slalom gathered at the residence of the Mayor of the City of Prague for a ceremonial reception ahead of the upcoming Canoe Slalom World Cup. Among those who received their start numbers were Czech representatives Jiří Prskavec, Jakub Krejčí, and sisters Martina and Gabriela Satková, as well as current Olympic medalists from Paris, including Jessica and Noemie Fox, canoeist Nicolas Gestin, and kayaker Giovanni de Gennaro.
The athletes were welcomed by Mayor Bohuslav Sobotka, who highlighted Prague’s strong and inseparable connection to water sports. “I wish you all the best navigating the course—may you be the fastest, most agile, and the very best. If I had the power to declare you all winners, I would gladly do so.” Words of support also came from Jan Kuklík, Vice-Rector for Academic Qualifications at Charles University:
“We are truly pleased to welcome such outstanding athletes to Prague. We look forward to your performances and hope that, beyond competing, you will also have the chance to see some of our beautiful city.”
President of the Czech Canoe Union, Stanislav Ježek, expressed his gratitude to the entire organizing team and volunteers, without whom the event would not be possible. He also taught the international athletes a few commonly used Czech words.
Positive feedback about the World Cup was shared by long-time representative of the International Canoe Federation (ICF), Sue Natoli: “I think this is my 25th time in Prague, and I always love coming back. The Czech Canoe Union approaches organizing the World Cup with great responsibility and respect,” she said, adding that the ICF is facing a major transformation and related challenges over the next two years.
“Despite the upcoming changes, I’m truly happy that we can continue our collaboration with the Czech Republic. This event is held to a high standard, and athletes leave with unforgettable experiences set against the stunning backdrop of Prague,” she concluded, also thanking the city for its long-standing support.
The World Cup kicks off in Troja this Friday.
